Climate Science Watch - breaking news on Mann defamation case

The Climate Science Watch has posted the following breaking news regarding Judge Natalia Combs Greene rejection of another motion to dismiss the defamation suit against the National Review
(& the Competitive Enterprise Institute):
"Judge denies National Review's Motion to Reconsider ruling in Michael Mann's defamation case"

Though first, here's a little introduce to the CSW:

Climate Science Watch was initiated in 2005 after founder and director Rick Piltz went public about the Bush Administration’s political interference in the U.S. Climate Change Science Program’s climate change reports. White House censorship and misuse of climate change communication had undermined the scientific integrity of policymaking and contributed to a failure of preparedness to deal with the impacts of climate disruption. After his resignation from the federal program, Rick teamed up with the Government Accountability Project (GAP) in Washington, DC, the nation’s leading whistleblower protection and advocacy organization. Climate Science Watch is now a sponsored project of GAP.
CSW’s investigation, analysis, communication, and reform advocacy has combined the concerns that have driven it since 2005: protecting freedom of communication by federal scientists; combating the global warming denial machine; holding government accountable for using climate science with integrity; and the policy mission of climate change preparedness.

Judge denies National Review's Motion to Reconsider ruling in Michael Mann's defamation case
Posted on August 30, 2013 by Climate Science Watch

"The Court finds that there is sufficient evidence in the record to demonstrate that Plaintiff is likely to succeed on the merits," said a DC Superior Court judge in her latest procedural ruling in the defamation case of Michael Mann v. National Review, et al. "The evidence before the Court indicates the likelihood that 'actual malice' is present in the [National Review's] conduct."

Petition WMO name extreme storms after climate change deniers

Manmade global warming awareness is a many faceted struggle - Here's a creative approach to raising awareness another notch - I hope the petition get's lots of signatures and that this effort gains momentum.

Since we do still need to laugh once in a while...
while driving home a serious point.

Petition to the WMO to name extreme storms after climate change deniers.

Since 1954, the World Meteorological Organization has been naming extreme storms after people. As scientific evidence shows that climate change is creating increasingly frequent and devastating storms, and with climate scientists declaring these extreme weather events as the new normal, we propose a new naming system. A system that names extreme storms caused by climate change, after the policy makers who deny climate change and obstruct climate policy.

Watts' Ten Tests to Determine... Concern about Global Warming

It's pretty much finished now... but I'll be back to clean up the rough edges

Anthony Watts has a video out where he lists ten tests that to his way of thinking prove that the scientific community's collective considered and educated opinion should be rejected and that we have nothing to fear from global warming.

Interestingly comments to Anthony's video have been disabled.  Add to that all the folks Watts has banned from his WUWT blog and it seems the man certainly has a fear of facing the information educated scientists have shared.  But then, what can you expect from someone who believes Earth Sciences are supposed to bend to economic policy desires.

That's why I believe calling what Anthony Watts' does "Science in a Vacuum" is an applicable description.

To underscore my point I present the following review of
"The Ten Tests to Determine Whether You Should Be Concerned about Global Warming"

I've listed his claims followed by authoritative sources of information that share the other side of this story, the one that Anthony and his crowd are doing everything they can to ignore or out-shout.

There is quite a contrast between the ex-TV weatherman turned libertarian political activist -
and the scientists who have spent a life time learning and studying this stuff up close and in detail.

Mr. Anthony Watts, how can you ignore evidence like this?

While Anthony Watts loves calling folks he dislikes trolls, I suggest that Mr. Watts has all the hallmarks of a "science troll"

Consider, his career has been built on attacking pretty near every climate science study and report that comes out with the single minded intention of misrepresenting, denying and out-yelling the substance of such studies.  He champions the likes of Lord Monckton (some more) and Alex Mรถrner (some more).

Anthony, turns a deft ear to expert comments that correct his misrepresentations and rants on as though there wasn't anything out there other than his voice.

For example continuing to deny the dangers from rising sea levels, while ignoring clear evidence such as that presented by Professor Mitrovica:

Mr. Anthony Watts, What's up with You?

This morning I received an email telling me I should take a look at WUWT since I've received an honorable mention.

So I did - this is watt I found under "My Blog Spawn" :
whatsupwiththatwatts.blogspot.comblog_children_wattsupwiththatwattsProprietor: unknown at this time, goes by the name “” in Durango, Colorado.
Some of this person’s skills: cut and paste
Reason for creating the blog: unloved at WUWT, multiple policy violations there, assigned to the permanent troll bin.

Obviously Anthony has not read much at this site or at my CitizensChallenge blogspot or he would appreciate that along with sharing {that would be cutting and pasting} valuable authoritative information from experts, I also do a fair amount of original writing.  That he can't manage to figure out my name simply underscores the man's superficiality.

The reason I started these blogs was that I was sick and tired of seeing the climate science denial industry's {of which Anthony Watts is a major spokesperson} strangle hold on Google searches and there simply needed to be more exposure of the valid information folks like Anthony have made a career out of avoiding, misrepresenting, denying and out-yelling.

Mine is a modest effort, but someone(s) have to step up to confront the strategic assault on pragmatic rational learning in order to understand what our society's Grand Geophysical Experiment is doing to our planet and our collective future.  It was nice of Mr. Watts to let me know that my efforts have not been totally in vain.

A short open letter to Mr. Watts

Mr. Watts,

I find it ironic how easily you label others "Troll" when you are the fellow that attacks every piece of serious climate science news with misdirection, misrepresentation, snotty slander and lies.

Is This Science? A comparison... Dr. Willie Soon vs. Professor Inez Fung

A while back I spent some time with a video Anthony Watts was touting -  It was the infamous Willie Soon PhD, solar physicist turned climate science "debunker."  He was giving his "scientific" explanations for why he believes pretty much all of climate science is a hoax... and worse.

Dr. Willie Soon Guest Comment: ‘Is What I Say Beyond the Boundaries of Reasonable Discussion?’
Guest essay by Russell Cook

Dr. Soon seemed comfortable voicing all sorts of conspiracy laced claims towards others who have complained about the quality of his work, while attempting to project an image as a straight shooter, in spite of a rather generous income provided by very politically motived interests.

INDEX for my Climate Science Video Collection

My first website http://citizenschallenge.blogspot.com developed into a venue that focuses primarily on Earth observations, climate science and education, whereas I started this website to focus on climate science deniers and to examine some of their ruthless attacks on rational thinking and learning.

Since attempting to encourage serious learning by sharing authoritative sources of information is also at the heart of this website. I've decided to share some links to a series of posts where I've collected some first class climate science education videos and lectures.

Enjoy and happy learning!

Fox News: A driving force behind global warming denial

I know I single out Watt's and McIntyre's deceptions quite a bit, but let's not forget these people would be nothing without the PR megaphone afforded them by certain deep-pockets and some leading Republican oil-interest warriors, Senator Inhofe and Rep. Barton jump to mind.  The third leg of this massive con-job is the media, among the biggest players there is the Murdoch owned Fox Network and Wall Street Journal Op-Ed pages.

Because of this - I found a recent SkepticalScience.com post worth adding to the collection over here at WUWTW.

At the end of the SkepticalScience.com post there's a link to the Guardian article it's based on.  Here's a hopeful piece of information from that longer article:

A growing number of American conservatives are demanding that the Republican Party stop denying the problem and begin participating in crafting the solution. For example, the list of conservatives supporting a revenue-neutral carbon tax continues to grow:
51 percent of registered RepublicansArt Laffer, economic advisor to Ronald Reagan
Greg Mankiw, economic advisor to George W. Bush and Mitt Romney
George Shultz, Reagan's Secretary of State
Gary Becker, Nobel Laureate in economics
Bob Inglis, former Republican Congressman from South Carolina
A staffer for a House RepublicanWilliam Ruckelshaus, EPA Administrator under Nixon and Reagan
Lee Thomas, EPA Administrator under Reagan
William Reilly, EPA Administrator under George H.W. Bush
Christine Todd Whitman, EPA Administrator under George W. Bush

Let's hope that list grows in a hurry.

Anthony Watts, about those AGW-critical "credible theories" and "best explanations"?

Anthony Watts featured an interesting innuendo recently, basically suggesting that Anthropogenic Global Warming skeptics have indeed developed some "credible theories" and "best explanations" supporting their claim that around 97% of active climatologists are wrong about their understanding of our global heat distribution engine, also known as our planet's climate system.
